Madeira: Vertical Sea Cliffs, Mist Forests & Basalt Ocean Pools

Curated by Carnivalrankrippl Maritime Advisory • 12 Min Read

Rising dramatically from the Atlantic abyssal plain 600 miles southwest of Lisbon, Madeira is an island of extremes where towering headlands plunge into frothing oceans, and prehistoric laurel forests capture clouds.

Cabo Girão: Gazing Down 589 Vertical Meters

Perched atop the southern coast near Câmara de Lobos, Cabo Girão is among the highest sea cliffs in the world. Standing upon the suspended glass skywalk at its summit gives visitors an unobstructed perspective looking straight down into the surging ocean.

Directly below the cliff face lie the Fajãs do Cabo Girão—narrow strips of fertile volcanic soil cultivated with grapevines and banana groves by local farmers who historically accessed these isolated plots exclusively by boat or precarious rope ladders. Today, a modern cable car descends the near-vertical cliff face.

The Basalt Baths of Porto Moniz

On the rugged northwestern tip of Madeira, ancient volcanic eruptions formed intricate labyrinths of porous black basalt rock. Over thousands of years, the pounding North Atlantic waves polished these formations into calm, interconnected tidal pools.

At high tide, majestic ocean swells crash against the outer sea walls, sending plumes of spray into the air while the swimming pools themselves remain sheltered, tranquil, and continuously replenished with fresh sea water.

Ponta de São Lourenço: The Dragon's Tail

In stark contrast to the lush green interior of Madeira, the easternmost peninsula—Ponta de São Lourenço—is an arid, wind-sculpted headland of reddish volcanic tuff, yellow calcarenite, and black basalt dykes. Trekking the PR8 trail along this jagged ridge offers 360-degree vistas of crashing northern and southern waves simultaneously.
